About Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers many places to stay throughout the country, from small intimate bungalows in the mountains to beautiful beachside resorts. For more information about the best wedding resorts in Costa Rica, contact a Caribbean Weddings specialist.

CALLING COSTA RICA: The international dialing code for Costa Rica is 506.

CELL PHONES: Contact your local service provider before traveling to Costa Rica to see if prior arrangements need to be made to be able to use your cell phone and what, if any, charges may apply when using your cell phone in Costa Rica.

CREDIT CARDS: All major credit cards and traveler’s checks are accepted just about everywhere.

CURRENCY: Costa Rica’s unit of currency is the colon, which ranges between 500-550 colones per US$1.  U.S. dollars are widely accepted, provided the bill is small and in good condition.

LEGAL AGES: The legal drinking age is officially 18 but it is generally enforced only in public places.  Identification may be required.

DRINKING WATER: Unlike other Central American countries, clean tap water can usually be found throughout the country and in most tourist destinations.  Most visitors also find that they can enjoy the local food.

ELECTRICITY: It is the same as in North America, i.e., 110 Volts at 60 cycles.

TIME: The time in Costa Rica is Central Standard Time.

WHAT TO WEAR: Depending on the region, visitors can find rain year ‘round somewhere and it is recommended that they bring a light rain jacket or poncho.  December through April is considered the dry season and the rainy, “green” season starts in May.
