About British Virgin Islands

Located 60 miles east of Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands include more than 60 islands, rocks and cays. Only 16 are inhabited, the largest of these being Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.  These are beautiful islands to consider for a Caribbean wedding.

ACCOMMODATIONS – Accommodations run the gamut, from full-service resorts to private homes and villas. Depending on a couple’s budget and tastes, they can stay in luxury or keep it simple and affordable.  Many people stay on chartered boats and yachts.

CALLING THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS – From North America, dial 1 + 284 + the seven-digit local number. From elsewhere, dial your country’s direct dialing prefix + 1 + 284 + the seven-digit local number.

CREDIT CARDS – Major credit cards are accepted by most, but not all, businesses. US travelers’ checks are accepted by many merchants.

CURRENCY – The US dollar (US$) is the official unit of currency.

DRINKING WATER – Bottled water is readily available for those who prefer it.

ELECTRICITY – The islands use 110V, 60 Hz.

TIME – Eastern Time (GMT/UTC minus 4 hours)

SMOKING – Smoking in public places has been banned in the BVI as a result of a law passed by the Legislative Council. The law bans smoking in public places including bars, restaurants, nightclubs, airports, offices, and sports facilities. It also bans smoking within 50 feet of any public space.

WHAT TO WEAR – Dress casually by day but bring something fun for dressing up in the evening to enjoy nightlife in The British Virgin Islands.
