Legal Requirements in Belize

The perfect wedding calls for a perfect location, and no island getaway offers a more idyllic setting than Belize.

From a lovely traditional wedding in one of the island's charming churches to an informal wedding on the beach as waves lap the shoreline-everything can be arranged to meet any couple's personal tastes.

For newlyweds, the beauty of Belize is the flexibility of the options. Get married on the island, or simply slip away for a secluded island honeymoon. The hotels offer packages that make both alternatives infinitely inviting at a range of price points.

For those interested in getting married in Belize, both parties must present proof of citizenship in a resident country. Such proof includes an original birth certificate with a raised seal or signed by a notary public, which includes the father's name, or a valid passport.

If either party has been divorced or widowed, the divorce decree or death certificate of the deceased spouse must be presented.

If both parties are over the age of 18, parental consent is not required.

A blood test is not required. A marriage ceremony can be performed by a priest, or a senior Justice of the Peace if done in the Magistrate's court.

For further information on how to apply for a marriage license, contact the Registry Department 501-227-7377  or by fax at 501-227-0181.
