Island adventures in The Cayman Islands
- The Cayman Islands are recognized as the birthplace of recreational diving. There are over 200 dive sites marked with moorings off the coast of Grand Cayman alone. All make for superb snorkeling and diving. The 100-foot underwater visibility allows you to view walls, caves, coral gardens, reefs, wrecks, and the world-famous Stingray City. Swimmers and divers can play with the fascinating, friendly creatures at the amazing Stingray City in North Sound by chartering a boat. Be sure to bring your underwater camera! For beginners who want to get certified in scuba diving, courses are widely available and thousands of divers have earned their certification while on vacation here.
- Snorkeling is another option with many sites close to shore, making a boat ride unnecessary. Among the most popular sites are Parrot’s Reef and Smith’s Cove, south of George Town, where you can enjoy parrotfish, coral, sea fans and sponges.
- For both diving and snorkeling, Turtle Farm Reef features over 14,000 green turtles.
- To see the water from a different perspective, go parasailing using the most advanced system in the world. It’s both safe and comfortable, and you can go on your own or ride in a two seat Skyrider.
- In stark contrast with the tranquil beauty of the ocean, the scoured ironshore, which is more than one and a half million years old, is said to resemble a hellfire.
- Pirates Week National Festival is a rowdy week of costume parties, fireworks and float parades. It’s held at the end of October and very popular with visitors, so plan ahead.
- The Cayman Tournament is an international fishing tournament which gives away large cash prizes.
- The Million Dollar Month, an international fishing tournament which takes place in June, gives away large cash prizes, a center console boat, a week at Morritt’s Tortuga Club and more.
- Batabano, a Caribbean-style carnival, takes place each year around Easter and the Taste of Cayman, a festival showcasing the talents of local chefs, happens every year in early July.
- The Links at SafeHaven is an 18-hole championship golf course set across from Seven Mile Beach, a world-famous landmark, and the North Sound. Highlights include sea views, lakes, and over 4,000 trees and shrubs. However, you don’t have to be a Jack Nicklaus or Greg Norman to enjoy the latest addition to the island located on West Bay Road. A mini-golf course has extravagant life-size animals standing guard in the midst of greens and exotic palms.
